To Vista or Not To Vista?
While there have been many posts on why you may or may not want to install a Vista upgrade, far be it from me not to throw in my two cents.
I love new things, especially computer related new things, so I'll admit, Vista is appealing. I'm not one of the doom and gloom naysayers that will tell you Vista sucks. However, is Vista necessary? That is another question altogether. The reasons why Vista will at some point become necessary for me are as follows:
1. It's pretty. Hey, I'll admit it, I'm shallow when it comes to what's on my screen! Vista with the Aero interface...nice.
2. DirectX10. Games. I love 'em. There's never enough time to play, but someday, when iD or whoever has come out with the next genre-defining DirectX10 game, I know I'll want to play it.
3. HDCP, aka High Definition Content Protection. Most any Blu-Ray or HD-DVD disc will be much more happy on a Vista computer due to the Digital Rights Management (DRM) that Microsoft has included with the release.
The reasons why I don't have Vista yet are, noticeably, closely related:
1. My main computer would certainly run Vista, with the Aero enabled. However, that's not enough to make me part with my cash just yet.
2. There are no DirectX10 games on the market, and even if there were, in order to play them in all their DirectX10 glory, I must have a video card that will run it. I don't. The only cards currently available that run DX10 are very pricey. And there aren't any games, so....
3. I don't have any HDCP movies, no HD at all. No HDTV, no HDCP compatible monitor.
Considering I must pass all these hurdles before making a Vista purchase worthwhile, I'm holding off. Why are/aren't you getting Vista?
