What has got many of the major software companies out there nervous? From the beginning, this blog has been about how many things people spend a lot of money on for their computer can be attained on-line for free, and if you run a company that makes money selling products that do the same thing as many of the free programs discussed here, wouldn't you be nervous? Well, last time I talked about Ubuntu, which is a major competitor to Microsoft and Apple, in it's ease of use and ease of installation. Many people use their computer mainly to get to the Internet so they can surf the web, and check their email. Beyond that, some more 'advanced' users actually may use the computer to compose documents for school or for more traditional uses such as letters or lists, or record-keeping, and unless you have need for some kind of specialized program for your business, or are a computer user intent on playing specific games, why should the operating system of your computer matter to you? I have also talked about Open Office, but now a new wrinkle is coming that I'm sure some of you will love!
How many of you still use floppies? No, really don't tell me, I'll only get depressed. But why were floppies a great invention at the time? Because you could create a document or program an save it on a portable device that you could keep separate, and could also transport to another location and another computer so that you could either work on it there, or so that another person could contribute to your work. Since the advent of the Internet, this should have been mostly eliminated, except for one major roadblock. Not every computer you work on uses the same programs, and not everyone you want to help you with your project has the program you have. For companies, this has meant major expenditures on one particular software package, or one software suite, like Microsoft Office. In fact, if it was Microsoft's intent to make it so that most people just assume that Windows comes with Office, they've succeeded admirably. However, not every computer does come with Office, nor should it. No more than every computer need come with Windows! (I can hear the gasps from Redmond) Getting back to the topic, enter Google's writely.com. Now, no longer are you bound to only one computer, at one location to work on a document, and no longer is anyone that you want to contribute to your article bound to using the same software you do. Do you have Internet access? If you're reading this, you do. Do you have a web browser? See question number one... You too can use writely.com, anywhere there is a computer, and with anyone who also has a computer an web browser that you give permission to do so.
Check it out, and give those Microsoft shareholders something else to shiver about.
