firefox extensions
I hope by now most of you are starting to really get a grasp of things on the computer. If you have any questions, feel free to post, or email me if you want. I’ll try to get back to you as soon as I can. My first post was about using Mozilla Firefox, and I would like to revisit that today.
Firefox just released version 1.5, adding several new features, with better privacy and security at the same time. I’m not sure if any of you are still stuck in Explorer land, but please, please give Firefox a try. It is such a major improvement in dealing with the Web. Not only does it block pop-ups all by itself, but it also is much less vulnerable to scripting attacks than Explorer. If you’ve never had a site either try to change your home page, or worse, send you a Trojan, you’re very lucky. If you continue to use Explorer, this will happen to you at some point. So switch today!
Now that we’re all using Firefox, let’s talk about extensions. Since it is an open-source browser, they allow programmers access to the software so that they can add functionality to the browser. One of the first things that caught my attention was the fact that there in the top right corner was a search bar! A very nice addition to any browser as it is not a whole toolbar, and doesn’t take up any more space on your screen. But this is just the beginning to the fun. There are so many great little extensions to this product, that, once you start using them, and getting used to them being there, you’ll wonder how you ever used the internet any other way. My absolute favorite is Forecastfox. It runs in the background, getting weather updates for me every few minutes, and I never have to surf over to a web page, neither do I have to run another program in the background from startup.
There are also several more very worthy extensions to Firefox, so read up, and try them out!
