Virus Protection
Hey everybody! I'm back with another post. Over my next few, you'll probably notice a common theme, i.e.: Freeware that makes Windows XP function better. Most of the programs that I will be talking about are easily found and easily implemented. Any basic questions you may have will be answered with the program's FAQ, and any other in depth questions can be answered by many support groups.

Several years ago, I was an avid user/supporter of Symantec software. With the advent of the internet, it became requisite to use an antivirus program to protect my computer from potential infection. Since I had used other Norton products over the years, so based on previous experience, I bought Norton Antivirus. I was very happy with the product as it did exactly what it advertised in searching my system for potential threats and automatically updating itself whenever I logged online. However, several years went by, and I continued to pay every year for a new edition of this program, and then once a broadband connection became available in my area, to start using their firewall, and then came spyware onto the computer scene. Finally, I realized that my computer hobby was really starting to eat into my budget, not just in new hardware, but in more and more software and updates to that software, that continually drained my already limited budget. I finally decided it was time to do some research into this whole thing. I was already aware at the time that there were quite a few programs out there called 'freeware' that did many amazing things, so I surmised that there must be a free antivirus. Upon doing a search, I found a few, but most of them were trial versions that would require eventual payment, or advertising based models that I feared would place some form of spyware onto my system in exchange for virus protection. About this same time, a co-worker introduced me to TechTV, and especially two shows on that network: "Call for Help" and "The Screen Savers". I soon found that these shows had a wealth of computing information to give, including the answer to my search, a free antivirus program. Eureka! The answer to my search had come in the form of AVG Free Edition. I have now been using this software for over 3 years with nary an infection. It has caught viruses on more than a few occasions, and actively prevented such an occurrence. Now, this program is only for personal use, but this is more than fair, and should anyone feel very grateful, they can make a donation to the company. The website for this great software is free.grisoft.com I hope you'll give this software a try, and possibly even try their full edition. Until next time!
